Reading Activities for Kids and Enjoyable One

Reading is one of the most challenging skills to learn among kids. This is because, for them to read, they must first identify the letters and how they are pronounced. So, many parents would do anything to make their kids learn to read as early as possible. Others would enroll their kids in Kumon centers and hire private tutors. Other reading activities for kids would enhance their skills without spending too much. Here is the list.

Begin with songs

Songs or nursery rhymes are a great stepping stone towards reading. The more they listen to songs, the more they become familiar with the sounds. The greater their exposure to sounds, the easier it is for them to imitate these sounds and apply them as they begin to read.

Use technology

There are a lot of applications and software that could help your child reinforce their reading skills; as long as you are there to guide them as they manipulate the app and as long as you make the time between technology-based and hand-based activities balanced, it will be a great reading opportunity.

Home-made Word Cards

Use old cartons or any thick paper at home and write different words. Begin with simple ones like apples, bananas, dogs, cats, and all other usual child-friendly objects. Introduce the sound of these words until they can read it independently. Adding images or drawings to these word cards could reinforce the reading skill.

Print-rich Surrounding

The more exposure your child gets, the more comfortable for him/her to learn reading. So, ensure that printed materials like posters, cards, images, and other educational resources surround them. The more often they see these, the easier it is for them to memorize these and eventually apply them in actual reading.

Word Games

Some word games, either at home or anywhere you feel like doing it, can be perfect in building your child’s reading skills. Show an object and ask the child the beginning sound of the object. You may also play with rhyming words as a springboard in the actual reading activity.

Use Letter Magnets

Letter magnets are helpful when your child is identifying the use of both vowels and consonants. These may also come in handy when you would like to integrate word formation based on available letters. It is manipulative, making it an enjoyable process for your child.

Understand the Core Skills

Reading is not a single skill. It entails learning other core skills such as phonemic awareness (hearing and manipulating sounds); phonics (recognizing sound connections); vocabulary (the meaning of words); comprehension (phrase understanding); and fluency (using words). The combined core skills will allow the child to read fluently. So, be sure to guide your child in building these foundation core skills.

Reading Bonding

Reading stories together and making follow-up questions afterward teaches your child reading and comprehension. It allows your child to appreciate the material understood deeper so that they can relate it to real-life events through your questions.

Games with Visuals

Games that involve images of people, objects, animals, and places could reinforce learning. These are also readily available online if you do not have the material at home. You have to guide your child in using whatever equipment you will provide. As they see the word, they have to pronounce it.

Enjoy every bit of it.

Sometimes, you will feel exasperated and even desperate when it seems your child is unable to read a word. The thing is, you don’t have to pressure them too much. Reading comes in phases, which is not the same for every child. So, do not ever compare your child with the reading progress of others, for it will only upset both of you. Instead, make reading enjoyable for them to develop a positive attitude towards the task.

The earlier you start teaching them how to read, the more exposed they will be. Makes every chance or opportunity to teach them how to read without instilling fear and pressure. In the long run, you will be surprised by your child’s reading ability. Good luck and enjoy!
